Pt. 4 – That One Time We Said It
Believe it or not, I was a skateboarder. I had long, brown, and somewhat curly hair. I wore skinny jeans with big skate shoes. My skin was scraped up from falling and thumbs were rough from the grip tape on my skateboard. The entire afternoon was spent at Black Rock Skate Park… but this was before all of that. This was when I didn’t have any of those scrapes, long hair or any skill on a skateboard. I was terrible, but secretly thought I was going pro! (Okay… it wasn’t a secret). I was in 7th grade and Marc and I spent some of the afternoon in his garage working on kickflips, backside flips, and big-spins. It was relatively cold. Fall was just beginning and the leaves were in the process of turning deep orange.
There was nothing special about that day… or there wouldn’t have been until Marc told me that she liked me. My insides jumped and my heart raced as I started sweating under all of the layers that kept me warm, but I played it cool. “Really?” I asked with a hint of excitement in my voice. I liked her too and Marc was tasked with finding out if I liked her back (remember this was middle school). Eventually, he got it out of me, though it didn’t take all that much work on his part. It was out there in the open. Marc knew and it was time to take the next step. I liked her but she didn’t know that… not yet.
